Woolwoowin - Heritage Renovation
This beautiful Character Queenslander was in desperate need of some love and attention when our client first viewed it before purchasing. They could see the potential - it had a stunning wrap-around verandah (which had been enclosed) and an incredible brick chimney extending up through both the undercroft and main level.
The client wanted to honour the original features of the home, so we planned a sensitive renovation that retained and restored original rooms and features at the upper level. A large section of the roof needed to be replaced, allowing for an open-plan living area without increasing the home's footprint.
Located on a sloping site, we were able to retain the single-storey appearance at the front, but ‘build under’ toward the back. The lower level has a garage and laundry to service the upper level but also creates a self-contained 2-bedroom area for use by our client’s late-teen daughter. This area can be accessed separately when needed, while still maintaining the feel of a single household.
Our design incorporated marketplace finds repurposed as vanities, the original chimney supported on a new brick plinth at the lower-level living space, the original little garage converted to office and storage space, and a kitchen that feels homely and inviting but has a large contemporary layout. Supported by our clients’ aesthetic choices and furniture, the home now feels warm and inviting with a sense of charm.
